ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND:
After-School All-Stars (ASAS) is one of the leading national after-school program providers in the country. Our comprehensive school-based programs combine activities and learning to help build the knowledge and skills children need to succeed, both in school and in life.
A Community School is a partnership between school staff, families, youth, and the community to raise student achievement by ensuring that children are physically, emotionally, and socially prepared to learn. In the NYC Community School approach, each school is paired with a lead Community Based Organization (CBO) partner that works collaboratively with the principal and the School Leadership Team (SLT) to carry out the work at the school.
A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY:
We are seeking individuals for the position of Student Success Mentor. Under the Community School Model, through the NYC Department of Education, the Student Success Mentor will provide onsite support to the Community School Director and direct student support to K- 5th grade during the school day. Success Mentors will work closely with students, teachers, families, and other school stakeholders to support students with attendance improvement and any other academic barriers.
The Student Success Mentor will be responsible for providing academic and social-emotional support to students grades Kindergarten through fifth who have been identified as at risk and/or chronically absent. Success Mentors will support and guide at risk and/or chronically absent youth to address the barriers that keep them from attending school every day.
In contrast to more traditional mentoring, the Student Success Mentor model is much more integrated into the school environment, focused on attendance and attendance data, and dependent upon family engagement for success especially in the early elementary years. At risk and chronically absent students who have been assigned a Student Success Mentor gain, on average, 13 more additional days of school compared to the year prior.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Responsible for daily individual or small group mentee check-ins
● Track mentee’s attendance, interactions between students, family, and school staff
● Attend Attendance Team Meetings providing weekly attendance reports and attendance patterns to the Community School Director and School Leadership Team
● Responsible for creating strategies for engagement for at risk and chronically absent youth in collaboration with the Community School Director
● Communicate with families when mentees do not attend school and action plan strategies towards improvement
● Collaborate with Community School Director to identify supports and resources for students and families
